вЂњHello, boils and ghouls!вЂќ The greeting from the crypt keeper, as well as his awful puns, may have been the most frightening part of this 1980s series, which was a mischievous nod to horrorвЂ™s schlocky past and features big-name directors asВ well as Hollywood stars in the cast. It follows a group of survivors from an apocalypse who are trying to stay alive as they encounter the undead in various forms but never neglects the human story behind the scary set-up.

Scarily good: Three terrifying TV seriesД®ven if youвЂ™re squeamish about gore, this series stands up with the best TV of the last decade. Since heвЂ™s had four specials since 2017 and had extensive material about trans people in all of them вЂ“ it could almost be called an obsession вЂ“ you can only hope that heвЂ™s able to finally move on.

In fact, it feels like someone providing ammunition to unimaginative bullies.ДЄt the very end, Chapelle swears heвЂ™ll never tell another joke about trans people until everyone sees a bit more eye-to-eye. Chapelle claims that Twitter is вЂњnot real',В but this felt like comedy that is a product of Twitter-warped culture вЂ“ blatant trolling, half-understood hot takes and cloying sentimentality all woven into something that purports to be part of a conversation about moving society forward. Whether it should causeВ enough offence to merit Netflix вЂ“ a company that markets itself as LGBTQ-friendlyВ вЂ“ apologising for, or indeed pulling the special, is one question.В But another question, perhaps one more pertinent to the average viewer, is whether or not itвЂ™s actually funny.ДЄs a gay person watching it, I felt exhausted вЂ“ and not from mirth. There are bits where lesbians are mistaken for men, a punchline where he misgenders a trans woman who died by suicide (but itвЂ™s cool, because she would have found that funny, he assures us), and a line where he says that вЂњgay people love being a minority until they need to be white againвЂќВ (because there are no gay black people presumably). If Curb Your Enthusiasm pulls its punches, Dave ChappelleвЂ™s newest Netflix special seems to go the other way: wilfully baiting those who would seek to cancel the comedian, especially those who accuse him of being transphobic or homophobic. If it had actually delivered the angry white man jokes that these setups seem to suggest, and which were present in some of the last series, then this might at least have had the merit of being anachronistically different вЂ“ but thereвЂ™s a sense that the writers have simply kept the shouting and swearing while adding a surreptitious filter of amenability to David. The slapstick takes place at the golf course of a fancy country club, or at a dinner party where wives coo over each otherвЂ™s expensive jewellery, and the jokes are about things like whether you can call someone out for owing you money when they suffer with dementia, or whether publicly falling over robs you of virility in the eyes of a much younger woman (a brilliantly deadpan Lucy Liu). It all ends in chaos when one of the congregants opens a closet and realises that Brooks is that most loathed of pandemic sinners вЂ“ a hoarder.Д¬ompared to last seasonвЂ™s nod to world events вЂ“ Larry wearing a red MAGA cap to repel liberal well-wishers in Los Angeles вЂ“ this feels like a weak attempt to tap into the zeitgeist.ДЄnd, though there is another barb at the Orange One вЂ“ вЂњthe Trumps ruined the name Don Jr for everyoneвЂќ, Larry observes at one point вЂ“В it actually feels like the kind of series that the Donald, or men like him, might enjoy. Meanwhile LarryвЂ™s friend, Albert Brooks, is having a funeral for himselfВ вЂ“ his logic being that he wonвЂ™t get to enjoy the eulogies (one of which features Jon Hamm speaking Yiddish)В when heвЂ™s really gone. So far, so spooky, but then, very quickly, the new series settles down into familiar territory: couples bickering, quip-filled jousting between Larry and his celebrity friends, and Jewish nihilism mined for cringe humour.ДЄt length, Larry learns that he was expected, by law, to have his pool fenced off and the brother of the unfortunate trespasser blackmails Larry into casting his daughterВ вЂ“ an overweight taco waitressВ вЂ“ in the role of an underweight girl in a freshly commissioned Netflix series called Young Larry (itвЂ™s a kind of Curb Your Enthusiasm prequel. On a moonlit night, a body is found lying face down in Larry DavidвЂ™s pool, prompting the predictable chorus of roaring and kvetching from the sitcomвЂ™s anti-hero. At first it looks as though the new series of Curb Your Enthusiasm might be jostling in on the glut of Halloween specials that will get an airing this weekend.
